Projects

The following is a sampling of Poris and Associates projects :

  • Training and facilitation of detailed Process Flow Diagram's, PFMEA's, and Control Plans for several military suppliers to General Dynamics. This project resulted in numerous recommendations for reduction of variability and quality improvements throughout the various facilities. Suppliers and technologies represented included:
    • Closed die forged parts for military tracked vehicles.
    • Large machined, armor plated parts
    • Advanced composites (wrapped drive and propeller shafts
    • Wiring harnesses
  • Process, design, and quality improvement recommendations for Dongfeng Xiangfan Instrument Systems, a Chinese automotive sensor manufacturer located in Xiangfan, Hubei Province, China. The project was managed under the auspices of the SAE-ARI (Automotive Resources Institute), of which Mr. Poris was a registered consultant. Mr. Poris wrote the bulk of a major report, published by the SAE (restricted publication and availability) for the client, detailing many recommendations for immediate, significant quality and process improvements.
  • Poris and Associates coordinated all "matchmaking" activities for the Michigan-Israel Business Bridge (MIBB) automotive event held at Automation Alley in Troy, Michigan in January, 2009 and included over 50 Michigan companies and 13 Israeli companies interested in doing business in Michigan.
  • John Poris acted as co-chair for the second Michigan-Israel Business Bridge (MIBB) automotive event in Detroit in June, 2012, where significant “matchmaking” occurred between Israeli automotive suppliers and US Automakers and Tier One and Two Automotive Suppliers
  • Part of a "core team" working with a major defense contractor to analyze their Product Development Process and recommend specific improvements to enable the contractor to optimize timing from "Concept to Prototype".
  • Ongoing volunteer work as a "Quality Improvement Coach" (QIC) for IPIP (Improving Performance In Practices), a national organization dedicated to making physicians' offices more efficient and improve both the level of care for Diabetic patients and their objective health metrics.
  • Successfully worked in Business Development with an Israeli defense contractor to penetrate the Automotive industry with new technology. Our efforts were directly responsible for issuance of a "Letter of Intent" from by a major Korean automaker and the initiation of a joint development project between the two companies, in Korea, starting in late 2009.
  • Worked with a small startup company to define and refine their manufacturing process and develop requisite manufacturing process documentation.
  • Documentation and optimization of the manufacturing process of a small chemical plant in Las Vegas with the goal of duplicating the process at will in various locations. The project included evaluation of the current process, recommendations for process improvements and error proofing (Poke-Yokes), and assistance with implementation of the recommendations.  The client implemented a substantial number of our recommendations and has opened a second manufacturing facility in Michigan.
  • Training at automotive Tier One and Aftermarket suppliers in Problem Solving (based on Ford Motor Company’s 8-D process)
  • Development of training materials and delivery of training in DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis).
  • Development of 1 and 2 day APQP training modules, delivery of training to various clients
  • Provided training to a software developer and their automotive customer to aid in implementation of the software company’s DFMEA module at the customer.
  • Lean assessment of a major German OEM’s aluminum foundry and tool shop (in Germany). Part of a team assessing the level of lean manufacturing and development processes throughout the foundry and tool shop.  Resulted in several major recommendations for improvement.
  • Lean, Logistics, and Quality assessments of a major German OEM’s primary van plants (2). Part of a team assessing level of lean manufacturing, logistics, and quality systems effectiveness.  Resulted in several concrete recommendations for improvement of quality and quality tracking (Quality Operating System – QOS).
  • Quality issue resolution and technical support for a Chinese supplier of washer pumps having a major issue with a North American tier-one customer. Project involved travel to customer sites representing the client, verification of the issue, clear communication and liaison between customer and supplier, work with the supplier to reach and resolve root cause, and presentation of the final 8-D to the customer.
  • PFMEA development and Manufacturing assessment for a defense contractor manufacturing armor plated components for military vehicles. Resulted in a number of detailed recommendations for improvement of the contractor's manufacturing facility, including suggestions aimed at significant reduction of inventory and improvements in throughput.
  • Development of a “Center of Excellence” (internal consulting group) for DTE Energy. Project involved determination of organization’s needs, assessment of skills required, evaluation of available resources, and compilation of organizational documentation.  This project did not include the implementation phase.
  • Supplier Development project for Eclipse Aviation, including in-depth capacity and capability analysis of multiple suppliers.  Technologies included advanced composites, thin skin sheet metal, electronic-hydraulic units, rubber de-icing boots, interior systems, and other miscellaneous technologies.  The project also included an in-depth analysis of Eclipse's capabilities in specific process areas along with recommendations for improvement.
  • Due diligence project for a private equity firm investigating the purchase of several companies. Technologies evaluated included open forge casting, deep draw aluminum, thermo-formed and roto-molded plastics.
  • Development and Delivery of a one hour presentation on 8-D Problem Solving to the ASQ (American Society of Quality) Akron-Canton (Ohio) District Fall Conference.
  • Assessment of planning for a North American automotive electronics plant to be built in the Detroit area by a major Tier One supplier. Project included evaluation of current planning and recommendations for improvements to the plans.
